Built and operated by GMR-Megawide consortium (a joint-venture between a local company and an Indian conglomerate), the renovation and expansion of the international airport is a PHP 17.5-billion investment. The airport is designed of wooden arches appearing like an inverted boat hull, and a wave-like roofing elicits a tropical and resort-like feeling.

According to local airport officials, the airport will cater to 26 airlines flying passengers to more than 30 local and international destinations. It has a floor area of 65,000 square metres and is expected to reduce congestion at the original airport with the increase in the annual passenger capacity from 4.5 million to 12.2 million.

The terminal has officially been operating since July 1, 2018.

AVK valves for air-conditioning (ICV) and plumbing (AVK) were technically approved after a series of compliance from Arup Hong Kong, who is the official mechanical works consultant for the project. A variety of valves and accessories were included in the order. This is the second airport project for AVK Philippines Inc., the first one being a domestic airport also located in southern Philippines.
