Automatic flow control valves at water treatment works in Yorkshire

Six automatic flow control valves with solenoid overrides and stem indicators have been supplied for UK water production sites

Six control valves were delivered at two water production sites in Yorkshire, UK. Each of the sites has three boreholes individually connected to a flow control valve.

When the pump starts, the water is unclean and the valve opens to flush it out. The solenoid override closes the valve once turbidity is achieved and when the flow control valve is fully closed, water is pumped into the distribution network.

The water treatment works in Yorkshire are only allowed to flush a certain flow into the creek and therefore the control valves are needed to limit the flow accordingly. The main valve is located below ground and on top of the valve is a stem indicator signalling the position of the stem to the PLC. On the stem indicator, there is a bleed valve to remove air upon start-up.

The main valve is connected to the pilot with insulated pipes. The pilot is located above ground for ease of operation and maintenance. Thus, the operator can fairly easy change the valve settings or carry out minor services. Using the flush valve it is also possible to clean the pilot filter during valve operation. The pilot has indicators for easy installation of electrical solenoids. 

A flow control valve can maintain a pre-set flow regardless of any changes in the inlet pressure. On AVK control valves it is possible to adjust the opening and closing speed independently. 

While the flow control valve ensures that the flow does not exceed a pre-set value, a meter makes sure that the technicians can follow the flow on a display and afterwards adjust as required.
